Wards
Adults (EP3)
A multiprofessional team consisting of neurologists and nurses both specialised in epilepsy, psychologist, ergotherapist, physiotherapist and speechtherapist cares for adult patients with epilepsy and deals with the complex problems of diagnostic investigations and treatment options in epilepsy. In particular following first epileptic seizures, we offer tailored diagnostic procedures and counselling, and – if applicable – allocation to differentialdiagnosis (psychogenic non-epileptic seizures, syncopes, etc.). Patients 18 years or older taking care of themselves are admitted to this ward.
Diagnostic procedures include observation and classification of seizures by videometry, sophisticated EEG recordings including long-term video-EEG, neuroimaging (MRI), psychological diagnostics including neuropsychology and extensive laboratory examinations. These tools allow for allocation and classification of epileptic as well as non-epileptic seizures and epileptic syndromes, for identification of the underlying cause of epilepsy, and for detection of possible side-effects of antiepileptic drugs.
Therapeutic options offered comprise pharmacological treatment, ergotherapy for testing of general capacity, psychological supervision, social medicine counselling, and physical therapies. To strengthen coping strategies, to improve understanding of the chronic disease, and to promote and stabilise occupational and social integration we apply an interdisciplinary treatment concept incorporating individual and group therapies.
We closely work together with other departments of our hospital such as general medicine and psychiatry.
Currently, patients stay in 2- and 3-bed-rooms (one 4-bed-room). From summer 2013 onwards, all patients will be offered single and double rooms.
