Patients with special needs (EP2 )

For patients with epilepsy who in addition have special needs we offer a comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic programme. This is kept up by a multidisciplinary team consisting of neurologists and nurses both specialised in epilepsy, psychologist, ergotherapist, physiotherapist and speechtherapist.

The diagnostic focus is on differentiation of epileptic seizures from other paroxysmal events that are characterised by motor or behavioural signs. This is facilitated by videometry in all rooms used by patients, but also by routine and long-term EEG recording. In addition, we aim to detect the causes of epilepsy using neuroimaging techniques such as MRI, that – if necessary – can be performed in sedation and anaesthesia.

As most of our patients with special needs have multiple physical, psychic and social problems, our treatment strategies are based on a comprehensive-care approach. Most patients treated on this ward have difficult-to-treat forms of epilepsy characterised by frequent and disabling seizures. These patients are offered the broad treatment armentarium currently available including new antiepileptic drugs, vagal nerve and deep brain stimulation as well as resective and palliative epilepsy surgery.

To strengthen coping strategies, to improve understanding of the chronic disease, and to promote and stabilise occupational and social integration we apply an interdisciplinary treatment concept incorporating individual and group therapies.

Currently, patients stay in 3- to 4-bed-rooms. From summer 2013 onwards, all patients will be offered single and double rooms.
